It was another win for the Swampscott girls indoor track team, a 49-37 triumph over Winthrop at home Jan. 16. The Big Blue is 3-1 in the Northeastern Conference South Division, still trailing undefeated Danvers, and 4-2 overall.

“I expected them to do well,” Coach Amy Lesnever said. “We have a strong team that’s capable of turning in a good performance week in and week out, and that’s why we have a winning record.”

Kellie McHugh (first place) and Lindsay Walsh (second place) got it all started versus the Vikings by topping the high jump ticket. Kelly Walton (26-2) bested the entire field in the shotput.

McHugh (7.7) came back to secure another first place finish, this time in the 55-meter dash. Erica Mazman (47.6) came in second in the 300. Sara Sharp (10.9) was third in the 55-meter hurdles.

Skylar Sabbag (1:53.5) and Hannah McLeod (2:01.9) were second and third in the 600. Walsh (3:17.3) was victorious in the 1,000. Robin Herlihy (3:33.3) came in third.

Walton (5:46.8), running the mile for the first time, wasted little time to establish herself in this event with a solid win. Amelia Antrim (5:54.6) was close behind in second place.

Michaela Jancsy (14:01) and Hannah Rosen (14:17) were second and third in the two-mile. The locals also won the mile relay with Sabbag, Walsh, Walton and Mazman (4:33.7) as the participants.

The Big Blue have one more regular season meet left against rival Marblehead Jan. 30, and then it’s on to the annual Northeastern Conference Meet, followed by the state meets.

Swampscott - It was another win for the Swampscott girls indoor track team, as they try to keep pace in the Northeastern Conference Small Division with undefeated Danvers (3-0). The Big Blue is also tied with perennial rival Marblehead at 2-1. The locals are 3-2 overall.

Their latest conquest was against Saugus, a divisional opponent, at home, 48-33 Jan. 9.

Kellie McHugh (4-10), who’s back feeling better, ended up second in the high jump. Kelly Walton (25-10.5) bested the entire field in the shotput.

Sara Sharp (10.8) did the same in the 55-meter hurdles. Patty Silva (11.0) and Darlene Vu (11.3) completed the clean sweep in that event with second and third place finishes.

McHugh (8.2) returned to account for third in the 55-meter dash. Erica Mazman (46.0) broke the tape first in the 300. Emily Generazzo (49.3) came in third.

Skylar Sabbag (1:50.1) finished second overall in the 600. Walton (3:19.5) recorded another first place finish, this time in the 1,000. Molly Heller (3:49.4) was third.

Sophomore Lindsay Walsh (5:39.5) continued her mastery in the two-mile with another first place finish. Robin Herlihy (6:05.8) was credited with three more points for the team in this event after securing a second place finish. Hannah Rosen (6:39.6) made it a complete sweep.

Amelia Antrim (12:56) went to the head of the class in the two-mile. Michaela Jancsy (14:31) settled for third.

Coach Amy Lesnever took four groups to the Division 4 State Relays at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center Jan. 12.

The distance medley relay team of Walton, Mazman, Sabbag and Walsh (13:06) distinguished itself with a third place finish against other elite quartets throughout the state. The medal-winning squad has a chance of qualifying for the prestigious McIntyre Elite Relays on Jan. 27, depending on the times in the other divisions.

Bromfield (12:52.58) and Hamilton-Wenham (12:55.7) finished ahead of the locals in this statewide event for Division 4 schools.

“I was hoping that we’d place in the Top 6, and so finishing third was excellent,” Coach Lesnever said.

Senior Amberly Greenwood, Molly Spillane, Gabby Wootten and McHugh (2:06.44) participated in the 4 by 200 relay. Kerry Brown, Zoemma Wharfshofsky, Hannah McLeod and Wootten (5:01.35) competed in the 4 by 400 relay. Gabby Archilla, Katie Hicks, Rosen and Heller (11:51.73) took part in the 4 by 800 event.

The Big Blue went up against Winthrop Jan. 16 after press deadline, and then they will be off for a while to rest up for the postseason. They will go against Marblehead to wrap up the regular season in Magician country Jan. 30, starting at 7 p.m.

At Swampscott, Kelly Walton was a double winner for the Big Blue (3-2, 2-1 NEC Small). She took first in the shot put (25-10 1/2) and in the 1,000 (3:19.5). Swampscott Reporter (01/10/08)

Swampscott - It’s taking the Swampscott girls indoor track team time to return to a regular routine after the holiday break. The Big Blue were able to win their first two meets of the year, but then the holidays interrupted their momentum.

A powerful Peabody team spoiled their undefeated season on the road Dec. 26, 53-33. Danvers then kept up the bad karma, beating the locals also on the road, 50-36 Jan. 3. However, it didn’t come as a complete surprise to first-year coach Amy Lesnever.

“[Peabody and Danvers] are both good teams,” Coach Lesnever said. “Peabody will probably be our biggest competition all year long, while Danvers is equal to us, but we just had a bad day.

“We’re just coming back from vacation, but at least we’ll be home for the next two meets against Saugus (Jan. 9) and Winthrop (Jan. 16) at 4 p.m.,” added Lesnever.

Against Danvers, the locals were missing a major piece to their puzzle in Kellie McHugh, who was out sick.

Lindsay Walsh (4-9) bested the entire field in the high jump versus Danvers. Kelly Walton (26-9) did the same in the shotput. Sara Sharp (9.2) was third in the 50-meter hurdles. Stephanie Conroy (7.4) recorded a second place finish in the 50-meter dash. Molly Spillane (7.6) came in third.

Erica Mazman (42.0) broke the tape first in the 300. Skylar Sabbag (1:39.8) accounted for second in the 600, which was also a state qualifier.

Walton (3:00) came in second in the mile. Amelia Antrim (5:53.4) and sophomore Robin Herlihy (5:55.8) were second and third in the mile. Herlihy’s performance was another state qualifier for the locals.

Walsh (11:47.3), who’s arguably the best distance runner in the Northeastern Conference, was first overall in the two mile. Michaela Jancsy (14:02) was third.

Walsh (5-0) also turned in one of the few highlights in the Peabody meet with a personal best winning performance in the high jump.

The Swampscott freshman and sophomore girls then participated in the annual Auerbach Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center Jan. 6.

It gave Walsh another opportunity to shine, this time in front of a statewide track audience, and she didn’t disappoint. She finished second in the two-mile with a time of 11:48.02. Jenna Davidner of Oliver Ames (11:34) narrowly defeated her to win the event.

Antrim (5:50) was 13th overall in the mile. Emily Generazzo (48.9) turned in a solid performance in the 300, ending up just two seconds off her best overall time.

There was also the NEC Freshman/Sophomore Meet on Dec. 29. The local squad accumulated 24 points, with Walsh coming through with two first place finishes in the high jump (4-10) and two-mile (11:56).

Sharp (9.0) was fourth in the 50-meter hurdles. Conroy (7.2) was credited with a seventh place finish in the 50-meter dash. The top six in each event received ribbons for their efforts.

Off and running: Big Blue girls indoor track team
wins first two meets
By Joe McConnell/imcconne@cnc.com

Swampscott - Amy Lesnever, who was last year’s jayvee coach, has moved up within the ranks this season to take over the Swampscott girls indoor track team, along with her co-coach Melissa Geotzbecker. And so far, Lesnever has few complaints.

The Big Blue are off to a 2-0 start after wins over Revere Dec. 14 (56-30) and Gloucester Dec. 17 (48-38). They accomplished both wins in their brand new fieldhouse on Essex Street, making it not just historical but also a proud moment for the program.

“It’s great to be at home, and not having to travel for every meet,” said Lesnever, a 1994 SHS graduate. “We were always the other team’s guests; it was nice to be the home team.”

Lesnever and Geotzbecker have plenty of athletes to work with 45 on the team. Seniors Kellie McHugh, Kerry Brown and Katie Hicks will help them out as the squad’s captains.

“We’ve potential in the distance events from the 600 on up, and the high jump,” Coach Lesnever said. “We’re basically strong in all areas of the team from the hurdles to the two mile.”

Their Northeastern Conference opponents are also quickly discovering their depth after the performances against Revere and Gloucester.

The locals finished first in almost every event in the Revere meet. McHugh (5-2) and sophomore Lindsay Walsh (4-11) topped the ticket in the high jump. It was only the first meet of the year, but they wasted little time to qualify for the state tournament, along with three of their teammates, including Erica Mazman (46.5) in the 300, Kelly Walton (3:25) in the 1,000 and Amelia Antrim (5:55) in the mile. All three also won the respective events. McHugh (7.8) made states in the 55-meter dash with another first place performance, and Walsh (12:02) did the same in the two-mile.

It was definitely a most productive opener for all five Swampscott athletes.

Sophomore Julie Mazman (6:20) and freshman Michaela Jancsy (6:49) followed Antrim across the finish line in the mile to sweep that event.

Sophomore Sara Sharp (10.9) participated in the 55-meter hurdles for the first time, and she proceeded to come out on top.

The Big Blue also won the mile relay (4:45), with Hannah McLeod, Robin Herlihy, Kelly Walton and Erica Mazman.

Brown (2:04) and McLeod (2:05) were second and third in the 600. Herlihy (3:41) was third in the 1,000. Walton (24-7.25) came in second in the shotput.

The Gloucester encounter was much more competitive. It wasn’t decided until the relays, where the locals just ran away from the Fishermen.

“Gloucester gave us a good run for our money, and it came down to the relays. If Gloucester had won the relays, they would have tied us,” Lesnever said.

But as it turned out, the quartet of Skylar Sabbag, Walton, Walsh and Erica Mazman easily defeated their Gloucester counterparts, 4:29-4:38. They even took 16 seconds off their Revere time.

McHugh (5-2) and Walsh (4-11) ended up second and third in the high jump. Walton (24-10.25) settled for third in the shotput. Sharp (10.9) did the same in the 55-meter hurdles. McHugh (7.9) and Stephanie Conroy (8.3) went to the head of the class in the 55-meter dash. Erica Mazman (46.6) broke the tape first in the 300. Emily Generazzo (50.4) came in third.

Sabbag (1:53) and Brown (2:04) experienced similar results in the 600. Walton (3:20) and Gabby Archilla (3:45) accounted for second and third in the 1,000.

Walsh (5:40), Antrim (5:53) and Molly Heller (6:15) swept the mile. Julie Mazman (14:07) and Jancsy (14:38) ended up second and third in the two mile.

The Big Blue girls will have a chance to savor the early season wins for awhile, before they head to Peabody to take on the Tanners Wednesday at noon. They will then face the Falcons at Danvers Jan. 3. The annual Northeastern Conference Freshman-Sophomore Meet will be held at Gloucester Dec. 29 at 9 a.m.
